The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to campaigns to introduce laws governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
