Blues Boss Maresca Rejects Manchester City Speculation as Pure Rumour
Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has branded fresh reports connecting him with a move to Manchester City as "100% speculation".
The Italian manager, who once served as Pep Guardiola's assistant at the Etihad, responded to the ongoing rumours surrounding his future.
Maresca, named Chelsea boss in the summer of 2024, is under contract that runs through the end of the decade, with a possible extra year available.
"It doesn't bother me at all because I know that is 100% speculation," Maresca said. "And at this moment, there is no time for such distractions."
He went on to explain, "First of all, because I have a contract here for several more years. And my focus, I have stated many times, is just about this club and I'm honoured to be here. But again, it's rumour. One week ago I was linked with a role in Italy with Juventus. So I ignore it because I know that is not true."
Chelsea, presently placed in fourth position in the Premier League, are scheduled to face Newcastle United on Saturday in a 12:30 GMT kick-off.
Strain Following Previous Comments
Maresca's most recent statement come after he described a recent two-day spell as his "worst" since joining Chelsea.
Those initial words had fueled considerable talk of a potential disagreement between the manager and the club's key decision-makers.
When pressed if he had discussed matters with the club's leadership, Maresca responded, "We are in the same facility, so we talk about different things. But about the Everton media session, no."
The Italian did confirm he would "absolutely" stay at the club for the coming campaign and urged supporters to keep backing the team".
In more positive news, Maresca indicated that injured attackers Liam Delap and Estevao Willian could return ahead of schedule, possibly in contention for a fixture against Aston Villa on 27 December.
Perspective: An 'Open Wound'
The perceived strain between Maresca and the Chelsea board remains as an open wound that still create unease.
While there has been no further escalation of the situation publicly, there has also been no resolution offered, creating the matter unaddressed.
The atmosphere during these media briefings has become increasingly strained, raising fears it could undermine what has up to now been a promising beginning to the season.
Chelsea's sporting position is positive: they are in the top four in the league, have qualified for the League Cup semi-finals, and can achieve a favourable Champions League draw with good results in their final matches.
