2K Hires Popular Battle Royale Developer to Rescue Troubled Action Game Project Ethos

The renowned publisher has appointed Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to oversee the development team at 31st Union, which is currently working on the forthcoming third-person action-packed title known as Project Ethos.

Leadership Change Follows Mixed Feedback

The new appointee takes on the role of studio head at the development studio following the departure of former leader the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' lackluster unveiling last autumn.

Recently, 2K president David Ismailer notified team members about this strategic move through an official communication, which emphasized that playtesting had indicated the requirement for a distinct game identity.

Ismailer expressed that the team is now reimagining the project with a revised vision, aiming to satisfy gamer demands.

Trend of Key Acquisitions

The news follows a comparable action taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they brought on an industry veteran from the Diablo team to assist with the BioShock development group.

Below is the full content from Ismailer's communication:

Team—

I understand you all just wrapped up your meeting - I hope you’re as thrilled as I am with the positive developments. Previously I sent you all a note, I mentioned the following: “I am confident in this group. You all are some of the most motivated and innovative designers we have had the opportunity to work with - and we’re eager for that partnership to persist.”

Given your hard work and flexibility, especially over the last year, you repeatedly show that.

The community feedback from last fall’s the game testing phase was revealing. It confirmed the potential of a action-packed game but indicated we still had refinements needed. It revealed the requirement for a clearer identity.

The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve come. You took the input to mind and revamped the title with a renewed goal - one that’s positioned to achieve its potential to our fans.

The belief in Project ETHOS increases every day. To further the outstanding development you’ve made, I’m excited to announce Ben Brinkman as the incoming Lead of the team. After several months of discussions, Ben starts with us on next week.

His management and expertise in the PVP shooter space is extensive, having devoted the recent years developing and managing some of the most recognizable titles in gaming, for example Call of Duty: Black Ops, and most recently, Apex Legends.

Let’s together in greeting Ben next week. We are all looking forward to keep seeing the evolution of the game in the time to come.

David
